How to choose a nail clipper for cats, dogs, rabbits and birds
Scissor, guillotine or plier type? A short buyer's guide to choosing the right nail clipper: size, blade quality, safety guard and grip.

The three common types
The right choice depends on the animal's size, the thickness of the nail and your own hand.
- Scissor type: two blades like small scissors. You can see and control the cutting point, which is why it is usually recommended for cats, rabbits and small pets.
- Plier type: a strong lever for the thick nails of large dogs.
- Guillotine: the nail goes through a hole and a blade slides across it. Popular for medium dogs and some cats, but a dull blade crushes the nail and the cutting point is not always visible.
The right size for each animal
Small clippers suit birds, rabbits and rodents; medium ones suit cats and small dogs; large ones suit bigger dogs. Avoid human or dog clippers on birds: use a model made for birds, in the right size for the species.
What to check before you buy
- Sharp stainless steel blades that hold their edge. A dull blade splits and crushes the nail.
- A visible cutting point, so you can stay clear of the quick.
- A safety guard or stop against cutting too far.
- A non-slip handle and finger holes that fit your hand.
- A smooth spring that opens without effort.
Looking after the clipper
Wipe it clean and dry after each use, keep it away from damp, and replace it when it starts to split nails. Keep styptic powder nearby.
