How to trim the nails of cats, rabbits and birds safely
A general step by step: how to prepare the animal, find the quick, how much to cut and what to do if it bleeds. When in doubt, ask your vet.

Before you start
Pick a calm moment with good light and keep everything within reach: a clipper in the right size, a towel, a treat and styptic powder.
- The animal should be calm; if it is agitated, stop and try later.
- Use clippers made for the species, and keep them sharp.
- If you do not feel confident, ask a vet or groomer to show you the first time.
Find the quick
Inside the nail there is a pink part with blood vessels. Cut only the clear tip beyond it. On dark nails a bright light behind the nail helps you see the shadow. When in doubt, cut less: several short sessions are better than one risky one.
Cats, rabbits and birds
- Cats: gently press the paw pad to extend the nail and trim the tip, well away from the pink part.
- Rabbits and small pets: hold them firmly and supported, on a towel; scissor-type clippers usually give more control.
- Birds: wrap the bird in a towel leaving the head and one foot free, without forcing it. Many birds accept only one or two nails at a time; reward each step.
If a nail bleeds
Apply styptic powder (or a styptic pencil) and press gently until it stops. If it keeps bleeding or the animal seems unwell, see a vet.
When to ask a professional
Very long or deformed nails, an aggressive or frightened animal, and any beak or wing trimming should be done by a vet or an experienced professional. This guide is informational and does not replace veterinary advice.
